Galloway lies at the south western tip of Scotland, facing the Irish Sea to the south and the North Channel to the west. Scotland's most southerly point is the Mull of Galloway, which is further south than Newcastle. On a clear day it is possible to see Ireland, The Isle of Man and Cumbria.

Galloway refers to the former counties of Wigtown and Kirkcudbright. It is bound by sea to the west and south, the Galloway Hills to the north, and the River Nith to the east. The boundary between Kirkcudbright and Wigtownshire is marked by the River Cree.
